NATIONAL MAGAZINE NAMES OUACHITA-UNION PARISH METRO REGION IN THE TOP TEN
March 3, 2010

Leaders from across the metropolitan region of Ouachita and Union parishes are excited about the latest national ranking which shows our metro area in the top ten for economic development among metropolitan areas with populations of less than 200,000.

For the last 32 years, Site Selection Magazine, the oldest publication in the corporate real estate and the economic development field, has calculated the annual "Governor's Cup" rankings, which are considered by corporate real estate analysts as "the industry scoreboard." The rankings are based on the number of new and expanded facilities in 2009 for our U.S. Census metropolitan statistical area (MSA), which includes all of Ouachita and Union parishes. The region is tied for tenth place with 8 economic development projects among tier three metro regions.

"We are Monroe Proud to say that our city, parish and region have once again been included in a top 10 national ranking. Our housing market, our Garden District neighborhood, and now our economic development progress have been recognized as national leaders for metro areas of our size. We have been able to make these positive accomplishments thanks to our outstanding people and our outstanding partners. We will continue making progress through our successful economic development partnerships at the local, regional, state and national levels," said Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo.

"This is recognition for the economic development efforts of so many people from the state to the local level. We appreciate the extraordinary assistance from Governor Bobby Jindal and Louisiana Economic Development Secretary, Stephen Moret," said West Monroe Mayor Dave Norris.

Farmerville Mayor M. Stein Baughman, Jr. pointed to the cooperation and joint efforts which helped solidify many of the economic development wins in the region.

"The future of our entire area depends on everyone working together, and I've been so pleased with how well all our local leaders are pulling together to bring economic development to our region," said Mayor Baughman.

Ouachita Police Jury President Shane Smiley also applauded the coordinated efforts by the state, municipalities, and economic development organizations to bring prosperity to North Louisiana.

"This is a wonderful place to live and raise a family, and we are working hard to grow economically. To be recognized by Site Selection Magazine is a great honor, and the award is more proof that we are headed in the right direction," said Smiley.

North Louisiana Economic Partnership (NLEP) takes a regional approach to economic development, promoting the 14-parish region of North Louisiana to prospective companies interested in moving or expanding in our region.

"I'm excited about the economic wins this region has experienced. This is an accomplishment for all our state, parish, and local leaders and economic development agencies. It demonstrates how public/private partnerships and a regional approach can bring positive results and bigger gains over time. Recognition and success for one part of the region benefits all of North Louisiana because it increases the visibility of the entire region in the national arena. " said Billy Cox, co-chair of NLEP's Board of Directors.
